Monsters vs. Aliens

DreamWorks may have a good thing going here.
Dreamworks is having a very hard time trying to keep up the genuine perfection of PIXAR. Since these guys probably believe they never will surpass them the next best thing is to just make fun of them and everything else. So because of that mentality we get the latest DreamWorks film Monsters VS. Aliens.

MvA is the story of a young woman named Susan ready to take the next step in her life and marry the man of her dreams. Suddenly she is exposed to a meteor and starts to become a `big' problem. Now she is government property, has made a bunch of interesting new friends and is now part of a team that has been assembled to take down threats that the average man may not be able to handle. Her first mission, stop an alien invasion! Not too bad for the next step in Susan's life.

Monsters VS Aliens is a laugh out loud comedy that really appeals to a very diverse audience. There are numerous references to Sci-Fi pop culture and of course the Monsters in the movie pay...

Monsters to the Rescue
From the creators of "Shrek" and "Kung Fu Panda", Academy award winner Reese Witherspoon leads a ragtag team of unlikely heroes in the animated blockbuster "Monsters vs. Aliens". When the strange energy of a meteorite causes her to mysteriously grow to a towering 49-feet-11-inches, Susan Murphy (Witherspoon) is taken by the military to a top secret compound where the government has kept the existence of monsters hidden from the public for decades. Susan, dubbed Ginormica, and her new monstrous friends are called into action to save the world from the evil alien leader Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson). Though certainly not the best animated movie of the year, "Monsters vs. Aliens" is a very enjoyable parody of classic Sci-fi movies of the 1950s. The animated movie offers some amusing characters and loads of action and humor. The storyline is pretty straightforward but the computer animation is very impressive. The all-star voice cast also includes Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Seth Rogen, Paul...

MONSTER AND SCI- FI BUFFS SHOULD ENJOY THIS!
I grew up watching old monster and sci-fi films, so I couldn't wait to see this new animated tale that pays homage to so many of my favorite Saturday afternoon sci-fi films.

While the 3-D effects and animation are fantastic, I found the story to be lacking just a tad. I guess after Pixar's masterpiece Wall E, the bar has been set rather high. Regardless, it's a fun film and a special treat for those of us who grew up watching giant monster movies on the weekend.

I suggest seeing this at the IMAX in 3-D as it is really spectacular, with great voice work done by Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett and the hysterical Seth Rogen. It's a very good film, but I wish the story was fleshed out better, the material certainly deserves it.

'Igor' was another film that paid homage to Saturday afternoon fright fare, but that one dealt with gothic horror. Both films are worth seeing, but if they had been treated with the same care as Wall E or Up, we would...

Farm House

A Great Torture Flick With a Nice Surprise
Farmhouse is a rare gem within the overcrowded horror sub-genre of torture flicks. With movies such as "Hostel", "Saw" and "Turistas" already available on the market, it's usually pretty easy to pass on torture flicks. The assumption that all of these films are the same may make many potential viewers turn away from considering Farmhouse. However, given the opportunity to view the film, I'm sure that they will quickly have a change of heart in regards to this film.

The story focuses on a couple who lives in San Diego. Chad and Scarlett are husband and wife venturing to start their lives anew in Seattle, Washington. They depart from San Diego after leaving all of their belongings to some friends and begin to head towards their destination. The reason for their sudden departure? Chad was recently involved with "loan sharks" and out of desperation the couple believes that moving far away will protect them from further harm from these "gangsters". Previous encounters...

A Not Guilty Pleasure
This film started out with some promise, with fairly good production values and decent acting. I felt a little like bailing out half-way through it though, when the torture started - when the blood began to spatter. It seemed as if the film was degenerating into typical schlock shock - gratuitous gore.

But I'm glad I stuck with "Farmhouse." It takes a surprising U-turn, becoming more than exploitation, more than sensationalism.

You know how a couple of decades ago, starlets used to justify their on-camera nude scenes with the rote pretext that those scenes were "integral to the movie's plot." In this case though, the torture scenes really do turn out to be integral to the plot. And that plot turns out to be quite well-crafted. With almost old-fashioned attention to detail, all the loose ends get tied up. All the seeming little discrepancies that a viewer will probably just overlook along the way - get explained. This movie proves itself to be considerably better...

Cheese Grater anyone?
This was a film I had been wanting to see for awhile and finally decided to buy the DVD.
I'm glad I did.It starts off like most torture porn movies, a couple get in an accident and seek shelter with a seemingly sweet couple in their "Farmhouse".All seems wonderful as the owners of the farmhouse Kelly Wu and Stephen Weber share wine from their vineyard a meal and offer accommodations to the unlucky couple for the night.
What happens from there is surprisingly original and has some very tense nail biting moments. The ending really took me by surprise and I'm usually not a big fan of mixing the supernatural with my Slashers but in this case it really works and gives this film that extra punch that kind of knocks the wind out of you.. The acting starts off a little shaky but it picks up and gets much better as Stephen Weber and Kelly Wu are put into the mix.It also shows what kind of damage you could do "in a pinch" with a Meat thermometer and a Cheese grater. All in all I...

Management

Lovely little film.
This film was absolutely beautiful. It has that shy pre-emptiveness we expect from films which deal with tender topics such as love and approaching a girl. We all know that the chances of watching a Jennifer Aniston film and being completely bowled over are slim but this film does do that. I thought she was very good in the film and man, did the film have it's funny moments. Before watching this film, I saw Sunshine Cleaning and I quite liked the film. The one thing that is common between this film and Sunshine is Steve Zahn. Management, however, is the film that I liked more and I thought it had it's heart in the right place. At just 1 hour 20 minutes, this film never promises to conquer the world but it makes you go into guffaws.

This film has no flaws and unlike films like "You, Me and Dupree" this film never tries too hard to be cute. It's amazing how such films can be churned out even in 2009. I wish I had waited and seen this at the movies but that was not meant to...

An unexpected pleasure
This movie really brought tears to my eyes. I thought it was going to be a comedy. Instead, it was a romance with very honest characters and an unusually realistic feel to it. I think this is the best role I've ever seen Jennifer Aniston play. Steve Zahn is someone I've liked but never saw him as a leading man.
The words 'leading man' hardly describe him in this movie. He is one of the two main characters (Aniston is the other) and he draws the viewer into his world. At first, you wonder if you really want to be in that world. Then, by the end of the movie, you feel like he could be your best friend.
I can't help but think of another movie, 'Being John Malkovich', that tries to bring the viewer into a world. Sure, that world is topsy-turvy but the point is: that movie doesn't succeed in doing that half as much as this movie does. And that movie was critically acclaimed. This movie has not gathered much notice but I predict it will gain a reputation and stay around for a...

little gem
This is one of Jennifer annistons lesser known roles. She and Steve Zahn are a most unlikely romantic couple. This movie is a little gem in the morass of overhyped stuff that hits the markets these days. It's gentle, humorous and has unexpected moments.I guess it would be a chick flick since there are no car chases, but my husband has watched it three times.

Naruto Shippuden, Vol. 1

Naruto Shippuden rocks!
Naruto Shippuden is a little different from the early Naruto years. But it is high octane adrenaline! Gaara totally steals the show. The action and story line arc takes up to 30 episodes before Sai comes into the picture. The only dissappointment I feel is in Viz Media, why are they bothering to release Shippuden 1 disc (4 episodes) at a time? They should go directly to box sets! And by box sets I mean, they should carry at least 20 episodes or more per set. Shipuden season 1 is like 50 or more episodes, each season is huge! Viz Media, why must you milk us of our hard earned money and give us so little in return?! Anyone who buys this disc or the next disc in this series, I suggest you hold off watching them until you have them all up to disc 10 in hand, these episodes catch you and never let you go, you will writhe in agony until the next release!

The Return Of Our Favorite Knucklehead From His Journeys
Finally the great Naruto Uzumaki has returned from his three year training with the toad sage and the new quests will commence, a little off topic while I have enjoyed the anime series including the filler episodes the recent Naruto manga chapters have really started to make me dislike the way the writers and creator are doing the series so much that if it continues I have a feeling that they may loose many fans, I know I'm at the line at this point of giving up on the manga series right now. That out of the way the first episodes are a true joy as you'll see Naruto reuniting with not only Tsunade, Iruka, and his sensei Kakashi but will also see how the rest of the Konoha 11 have turned out after three years away. The episodes will also show us what has been happening with the mysterious group Akatsuki and what they have been doing these last few years as well with their unknown agenda of capturing the containers of the tailed demon beasts. So if your not a fan of the filler...

Shippuden Arrives on a High Note
Naruto Shippuden Vol 1 is the first English Voiced release of the 2nd part to the famed Naruto series. This DVD contains the first 4 episodes of the series.

1: Homecoming (scenes from Manga Vol 34 (Chapters 306 and 207), Manga Vol 28 (Chapters 245)
2: The Akatsuki Makes Its Move (scenes from Manga Vol 28 (Chapters 246, 247)
3: The Results of Training (Manga Vol 28 (Chapters 246, 247)
4: The Jinchuriki of the Sand (Manga Vol 28 (Chapters 248,249)

I find that this set is a great opening and completely worth paying for to get these episodes on DVD. Shippuden seems to accelerate things quickly with multiple storylines possible, such as the invasion and capture of Gaara, the search for Sasuke still continues in the background, and the Akatsuki storyline and characters. Seeing several scenes from the manga come to life in motion is excellent and the voice actors they chose for the akatsuki are great. All of the other actors from the first part of...

Uncross the Stars

Wonderful Movie
This is a very sweet, touching movie. As usual, Ron Perlman shines in everything he does. He has more talent than a lot of the so called "A list actors". He should get more roles like this one. All of the characters were very real and believeable. Barbara Hershey is still excellent and beautiful. I felt like I knew every one of those senior ladies. How refreshing to see them given a chance to strut their stuff. A must see for anyone who loves good movies.

Uncross the Stars - A MUST see!
We recently premiered Uncross the Stars in Houston and everyone in attendance loved the film. It was great to hear people laugh out loud throughout the movie, and also watch them cry during the showing. One of the funniest parts of the film for me is the beginning funeral scene. It is one of the rare times in life when its OK to laugh at a funeral. We received glowing reviews of the entire cast, including the ladies in the support roles. Barbara Hershey is at her best, and many couldn't believe how talented Ron Perlman is as a complete actor. Ron comfortably handles a role that most people can't fathom, due to his other motion picture and TV successes. Kudos to Kenny Golde for creating a truly enjoyable film for all ages!

Decent Choice
This movie had the potential to be a great family movie but a few unneeded scenes ruined that. The movie really held my attention and I thought overall it was very entertaining. One scene when he thinks back to his wife there his wife makes a comment about his personal area and the other part of the movie is with talk about a sex toy. Neither scene made sense nor were they funny. The acting was pretty good overall. Other than those two scenes the movie was pretty good. Would have given it 4 stars and shown it at our church movie night if I could eliminate those scenes. I still recommend it for a PG 13 and others to view it.

WordWorld: Happy Holidays WordFriends!

WordWorld A+ in my book!
WordWorld is one of my son's favorite shows. As soon as the theme song comes on he comes running to the tv or stops what he is doing. I love it too because it is a PBS Kids cartoon and it teaches letters, amongst other things! If you have never seen WordWorld before, it is a show where are the characters and most of the scenery is made up of the letters that spell them. It is adorable and bright and has very catchy music too!

Since Christmas is going to be here in less than a month we have started watching Christmas movies to get into the spirit. Well since Aidan loves Word World, we of course have to watch Happy Holidays WordFriends! It is a new Christmas DVD featuring all the WordWorld characters and features 2 episodes. Aidan was so excited as soon as he saw the box and even more excited when the show started. The two episodes are The Christmas Star and A Christmas Present for DOG. The first episode takes place the night before Christmas and features FROG and DUCK trying...

30 min for $7?!
My son loves Word World, so i got this DVD for him. However, the 'playing time' info on the product description misled me to think there was actually 60 min of episode on the DVD. Not so - it is 30 min. The other 30 min are commercials. Not worth $7 - sorry. Big rip off. Now i know not to purchase any more of these 2-episode sets.

Kids love it!
I love this series! Even as I write this review, my 3 year old is jumping up and down because he sees the "word word" dvd picture on this page. He should actually be the one writing this review, perhaps. Anyway, you won't regret this purchase!

And as a side note- if you're shopping for Word World DVDs, this and the other themed DVDs don't give you as many episodes for the money, but it is fun to have a themed video to play on the holiday itself.

Shrink

Terrific ensemble piece anchored by a strong Kevin Spacey performance
Kevin Spacey shines in his portrayal of a Los Angeles psychiatrist, Dr. Henry Carter, who's been hitting the booze and drugs pretty hard in the wake of a personal tragedy. After an intervention by his family and friends falls flat, the doctor's father (also a psychiatrist, and played by the great Robert Loggia), sets his son up with a new patient, a teenage girl named Jemma (Keke Palmer) who has faced a tragedy similar to Carter's, in the hope that the case will help his son re-engage in life and better confront his own grief. Despite seeing right through the plan, Dr. Carter grudgingly takes on the case and it indeed starts him back on a more positive, functional path, though things don't happen easily.

An ensemble cast, mostly playing Dr. Carter's other patients, also slowly get drawn into the main story, either directly or through the comments they make about their own problems during their sessions with Carter. An unbilled Robin Williams is a particular standout in...

Really Enjoyed Kevin Spacey's Return to His Element
Kevin Spacey's absence from the big screen in the kind of role we'd taken for granted from him left a big empty space on the silver screen. This is the first time, since his Oscar winning turn in AMERICAN BEAUTY, that I've felt the thrill again of watching a character actor at the top of his game. He plays Dr. Henry Carter, a psychiatrist at the peak of his career in Hollywood, who has been brought low by the suicide of his wife. This is about the worst thing that can happen to a man of his professional calling as it signals his massive failure on every level as both human being and professional. Worse yet, he comes from a family of psychiatrists! As he takes to pot in a major way and sleeps out on his diving board, his family and friends stage an intervention for him and his fury knows no bounds. However, he keeps seeing his patients and, ironically, it is his patients who begin to bring him back to the land of the living. Robin Williams plays one of these patients, a movie star...

"Shrink" is a really good film.
"Shrink" has such copious amounts of ethos and pathos that you are completely sucked in. The performances are so nuanced and lived-in that there is such an air of reality to the proceedings. Kevin Spacey gives an incredible performance (one of his best, personally) and the amazing Keke Palmer delivers in spades. The interweaving stories work for the most part, which says a lot for that type of film. Sometimes movies like this can be contrived, and "Shrink" can be, but for extremely fleeting moments. The vignettes are stung together in a way that is only believable for Los Angeles (the ending for sure), and in that it works. The cinematography is inspired (with one hell of a master shot) and is like a whole other character. "Shrink" is not perfect, but either is life and this film is first and foremost a story about life, so I can forgive whatever flaws it may have.

Hugglers - A Friend in Need

Entertaining and a message presented in family format
Comedy abounds within a serious look at 3 couples who decide to attend a marriage retreat center. The guys planned on getting their wives fixed while they golfed and fished, and the gals hoped their men would get shaped up. Not only was there humor in their weekend ahead, but also enough conflict to cause each couple to face the true issues in their marriages. It's a Christian look at marriage repair, right down to the Holy Bibles supplied by the retreat center for each 'camper.' Yes, it's an outdoor, rustic setting, beautiful scenery, and a place in California to be coveted, if coveting over a Christian film location is allowed.

Of course the retreat owners Dr Craig and Katrina Sullivan use some rather unorthodox methods to bring success to the couples who are quickly identified as on the verge of real troubles. This couple is fantastic, singly & as a team. Jeff Fahey is the Dr., a burned out, in-your-face, negative counselor; while Victoria Jackson plays the blonde,...

Marriage Retreat Review
The Review

"Marriage Retreat" is a movie promoted as, "A roller coaster ride of love, emotion, and comedy." This comedic movie about a trio of unhappily married couples who decide to attend a Christian Marriage Retreat located in the mountains far from their suburban home lives resonates with both humor and realism. They are introduced to an unorthodox counseling couple who submit them to a sometimes comical program of marital discovery designed to find out who or what they are missing from their lives. Ultimately, the couples realize they are missing the key ingredient, "Jesus Christ." As they discover this bedrock of marital satisfaction, the couples then retreat into a new reality with God's guidance and acknowledge that they each need to work together in order to "live happily ever-after." Although this movie is presented as comical; at times it takes a very serious look at several problems related to marriage and the need for marriage counseling.

An interesting movie about working thru life's problems
I would actually like to give this 3 1/2 stars, but I'll be generous. It told the tale of three married couples and their problems mixing marriage and life's problems. I wish it would have emphasized more how these couples took their relationship problems to the cross. However, I have witnessed couples face problems not a lot different than the ones shown here. This movie emphasizes how important it is to be committed to each other and how to work toward solving problems, rather than to look at divorce as the answer. Anyone going thru a divorce knows how devastating it is for both partners for years to come.

Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa

EXCELLENT!
ok, so i'm happy most any time the Muppets do anything at all. it's true.

the only thing that i have NOT liked was the Wizard of Oz disaster.

this is the Muppets back home in New York being themselves, again. it is classicly told in the proper muppet universe.

the music is good and the jokes are fresh.

this ISN'T the MUPPET FAMILY CHRISTMAS, (nothing ever will be that great again!)
but it is the best thing in years!

Didn't Like it
I didn't like this movie at all and I should have read the reviews before I rented it. Bad movie!

Fun movie, even if the plot is a little underwhelming.
I originally watched this movie last Christmas. Surprisingly, they showed it multiple times on Comedy Network (basically Canada's version of Comedy Central): not exactly a network aimed at children. I'm a younger adult who's familiar with the muppets, but was born after their best years, so I wasn't sure exactly what to expect.

Don't expect an Emmy winning effort or anything more than a super-thin plot here, on those metrics the movie doesn't do much (it was originally made for TV after-all). However, it manages to get over these issues by having just a really fun Christmas atmosphere and some decent family-friendly jokes. In particular, Kermit and Pepe really drive this release. At times, for adult viewers, it is cheesy to say the least, but somehow with the Muppets even that seems forgivable. There are some great parts in this movie, starting with some great slapstick and overall comedy of how much damage the Muppets manage to do at the post office, to a great Sopranos...

Where is Winky's Horse

Lovely depiction of the Sinterklaas tradition
We saw this movie at the National Gallery of Art several years ago. I am Belgian and I wanted my daughters to experience the St. Nick traditions I grew up with. My daughters were six when they saw it and they loved it. Back then it was not available on DVD. I'm delighted that it is now. It is a lovely depiction of the St. Nicholas/Sinterklaas tradition in The Netherlands and Belgium. This story follows the movie "Winky's Horse" which we own and also love. There is nothing objectionable in either of these movies. Appropriate for children who still believe and those who don't. A perfect DVD to start the holiday season and introduce the children to a different culture. I am about to purchase this DVD, so I don't know whether it is an issue here, but my only minor gripe is that the DVD "Winky's Horse" sold by Amazon did not contain the original soundtrack in Dutch. Even the traditional Sinterklaas songs are translated into English, which really doesn't sound right. At the NGA we saw the...

Please pass the strupwaffles!
My daughters and I really enjoyed this film. We are all horse lovers and have family from the Netherlands so it was a fun movie for us to watch together.

Huntik: Secrets and Seekers, Vol. 1

Everybody Huntik! Go!
If you like this show, the DVD is a good purchase. The copy quality is excellent. There is an English subtitle track, and a Spanish audio track, which is fun to listen to if you are learning Spanish and have seen the show before, so you know what's going on. The opening theme song in Spanish is atrocious (off key and painful), but the voice overs thorugh the rest of the show are great. In the extras, they have the opening theme song sung in Italian, German and Spanish. I really like the Italian and German. There is also an original concept trailer, where Lok has brown hair and is named Jason, but the concept of the show is the same. It's odd to hear other people talk for the characters in this trailer, but that's part of the fun. I gave this DVD to a friend who had never seen the show but likes anime, and she liked it very much. I hope you enjoy it as well.

Great for kids
I think this is a great video for kids. I found it a bit melodramatic and silly at times (which I think means I need to go hunting for my inner child). It reminded me a whole lot of the Saturday morning cartoons I used to watch. In a good way. It's got more character development than usual and some nice animation. The plot seems solid enough and should interest younger viewers. This is a good title, but just not my thing.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Origins

Good Value!
I bought this at my local Walmart for $5, 240mins for $5, it kept the kids entertained during a cold and cloudy sunday afternoon, Money well spent if you ask me. The Animation is fantastic, now I think I will buy the complete series, PQ on this is superb for a single disc 10 episode dvd.

Skip this If You Plan to Order the Complete Series!
As the title suggests, if you plan to order the complete series, Don't buy this particular title. The entire DVD is taken from the series itself. You can imagine my frustration when I looked at the episode list on both packages and realized I'd bought essentially the same thing. Guess I should have researched better before buying, but hope this saves someone else the waste of money.

not the original
this is a side version of He-Man by Mattel distributed by "Mill Creek Entertainment", hoping that I would recaptured some of the episode missed from the 80s after school on local independent over-the-air channels it is not. The animated was pretty good, but not the original. This not that version, watch 15mins and shut-it off. Good thing I only bought for $1+tax at Dollar Tree.

Vampiro (Vampire)

A New Cult Classic
I felt that I had to write a review for this movie, since the only other review (at the time of this writing) seems to be written more to appeal to writers and other critics than it is for people who are actually into watching movies (you and me).

In short, this movie is BAD. If I told you anything different, or tried to 'church it up' like the other review, you'd probably want to hunt me down and slap me in the face with the DVD (since the other review makes it seem like a really good movie).

So, why would I rate a bad movie with 4 stars? Simple. It is the most FUN I've had watching a movie in a long time. If you watch this movie thinking you've landed on a hidden indie "jem" you're in for disappointment. If, however, you have a few friends over for drinks and pop this movie in, you'll be in for a real treat. It's one of those movies that is so bad, it's good! And it keeps getting better/worse with every scene. If you're into movies that make you laugh,...

Vampiro
This movie realy is not the best film I have ever seen. however for the budget it realy is worth the money. I was thinking it would be one of those bad b films. But It realy is entertaining an different. Damian Chapa is very suave in the role of Casanova. And the young girl who plays the 12 year old vampire is realy excellent hoping to see more of her in the future. She has one of those beauty's like Nastashia Kinski in tess. It was really an easy film to watch its no Oscar winner however It has one of those feelings in it that will make it a cult film.

Soulful with artful photography credits
I must say that I was impressed with the opening credits' artful photography on a boat. The story takes place in East L.A. and the characters are Mexican. The male lead, Casanova(Damian Chapa) is very compelling and the two female leads, one a young girl (Alma)who, although she had acting lapses, has the right looks and look and is effective, regardless. The other lead actress (BLanca) a big-legged curly-haired blonde, is delightful. The basic plot is half-human Vampire Casanova (Damian Chapa) is hunted by his vicious Vampire sire, Tex, who is a very uninteresting character who could have been played by anyone. But he and his cronies are just there as heavies. The real drama is between the Lead female, Blanca, her Lesbian lover, Sexiana, Casanova, and Alma, the hundred year old "12 year old" beloved "child" and companion of Casanova's.
Simply, the plot revolves around the hide and seek of Tex and Casanova with the females as pivot points. What makes this for me are the...

Sonic Christmas Blast

Info from a Sonic Fan
If you're looking for an AoStH DVD, the only thing you're going to find on here is "Sonic's Christmas Blast" the last episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (AoStH), which is a mix of the immensely popular series Sonic the Hedgehog (Best known as SAT-AM by the fans) and AoStH. As far as Christmas episodes go, this one is high quality, but I'm a true-blue Sonic fan.

As for the Sonic Underground episodes (Another Sonic universe entirely, about Sonic and his triplet brother and sister, Manic and Sonia), I have to disagree with the other reviewer. "Three Hedgehogs and A Baby" is one of most popular amoung Sonic Underground fans not only because it is a Manic-centered episode, but it is very heartwarming. Manic has to help take care of this drooling, cranky baby and we see his true colors. "Mummy Dearest" is worth it to see King Amonrappi and "The Price of Freedom" is also heartwarming is well. As for the three songs in the episodes, they are not the most popular, but they are...

A fun romp in the park
I'm a major Sonic fan so I take my blue hedgehog very seriously. But sometimes, like around Christmas, I want to watch a Sonic show that's just plain fun. Sonic's Christmas Blast is that in spades. Whether it's Sonic completing his tests of speed, rescuing Santa or knocking Scratch and Grounder senseless, you get to see Sonic's personality shine through with little or no excess baggage.

The best parts, though, were when Sonic was interacting with Sally or talking about her, not just because I'm a dedicated fan of the show Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAm) and Archie's Sonic comic, but they really were the most well written parts of the story.

The most common complaint about this episode, is that it's more based on the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (AoStH) TV show than the SatAm show which may be a valid complaint. To me there are times when things just get a little bit too silly, like Sonic taking over Santa Claus' duties at the end. I mean, Sonic's in a...

"Christmas Blast" Alone is Worth Getting on DVD...
I don't know about the extra Sonic Underground episodes - as a long-time Sonic fan, I was pretty sickened by that whole series - but the Christmas Blast episode (which has NO correlation w/ Sonic Underground) is very awesome. It's kind of a combination of the past two Sonic animated series that ran in the early '90s... I'd buy this DVD even if this were the only thing on it - it's a classic Christmas special worth watching. :-)

The Shortcut

Entertaining Teen Thriller
The Shortcut wasn't a hardcore horror flick but then again it was a PG-13 thriller .
I didn't mind that there wasn't gratuitous violence in it and I usually like a lot of gratuitous violence.

The actors are appealing and the characters interesting enough to keep your attention. It's more of a mystery and that lends to it's appeal.

They don't sugarcoat anything or have any less victims of violent deaths because it's PG-13 they just make you use your imagination more instead of showing you the actual kill in full effect.

There are a couple of twists that I saw coming but it was still a good story and cleverly done.

I think even a slasher fan "like myself" would enjoy this movie,I did.

There is a story within a story. The back story is how the Shortcut came to be and as time goes by reveals one of the mysteries..

The Shortcut delivers
The premise is simple: A group of teens, on their way home from school, come across a rarely-used shortcut. Turns out it's rarely-used for a reason. An old man who's owned a farm there his whole life doesn't take kindly to visitors. And if you think you know what's coming next, you have no idea.

Unlike a lot of recent horror flicks, "The Shortcut" has no big special effect budgets or gratuitous violence. The movie's thrills are created by its creepiness and atmosphere; it builds suspense instead of raising the body count. I'd compare it more to "Halloween" or classic Hitchcock than "Saw" or "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." "The Shortcut" is subtle, smart, and, with its hot cast--including Katrina Bowden ("30 Rock") and heartthrob Drew Seeley ("Another Cinderella Story")--a great date movie.

Cool Movie full of surprises
I have 2 teen boys so it's pretty cool to have a movie that revolves mainly around the teens from their perspective, as well as their quest to make it through 'The Shortcut'.

The premise of the movie is a mom and her 2 sons have just moved to a new place. They've been there a few months. One's a teen in high school, the other's about in 6th or 7th grade. One day afterschool, the youngest is talking to 2 other kids after school and they ask him if he's taken the shortcut before. He tells them no and they dare him. So he accepts. As he's walking, he trips over a dead dog and comes across a mean old man with a rifle letting him know in so many words that he'll be next if he comes back.

The boy runs away obviously scared. He gets home and tells his older brother what happened. His older brother tells some of his friends about the incident. One day at school, the football jock asks the guy what's up with this stuff he heard that happened with his little brother...

Jonas Rockin' the House: Volume 1

Awesome! But a few missing episodes...
Before I start, I just want to clarify that I am 21 years old and I love love love the tv show JONAS. I get excited on Sundays and I set my VCR (I know, I know, old school but we can't afford TiVo right now) to record it. This means I have all the episodes aired on tape and was only buying it so I could switch over to DVD to make them last longer. Before anyone else does this they should know the DVD doesn't come with all the aired episodes. It only comes with 5 episodes plus the 2 unseen episodes.
Spoilers!
___________________________________________________________________________
These episodes are:

Groovy Movies:
The three brothers are planning to swtich all their home movies over to DVD for their mom's brithday (hey! maybe I should have done this instead of buying it. Too bad I would have missed the JO Bro'd thing though.) Instead they accidently ruin their mom's tapes but come up with a way to fix it for her instead!

This is a cute...

Give it a chance- You will LIKE it!!!!!
I wasn't sure what to think from the previews, but have been pleasantly surprised, and now my kids and I never miss an episode. The Jo Bros' have really done well with their acting and have a great sense of humor. Kids and adults will get a kick out of this, and I'm looking forward to seeing how Disney develops this as it is a keeper.

A Must Watch For Any Age
Allow me to begin by saying that I am not a teen, nor do I have any kids. I am actually 28 years old, and I love this show. It is a great funny show that is very entertaining. Kevin, Joe and Nick are young and just developing their acting chops, but they are still quite good in the show.

If you give this show a try you will fine that you will indeed enjoy it and look forward to the next episode.

All of the characters are great and the situations they find themselves in leaves you laughing...

So go ahead and buy it.. TRUST ME you will lke it!

Rage

Voice of an Artist
I see all of Sally Potter's films. She is always different, new, and interesting.
I saw her latest, RAGE, at The Box, in SOHO. I had read online of this provocative movie with a wonderful cast set in the world of fashion; about its unique mobile premiere. I was puzzled; how could a movie be shown on the tiny screen of a cell phone? And then I saw it. Now I want to have it on my cell phone. Imagine, Judy Dench talking to you on your own cell, like your friend, who trusts you enough to tell you the truth, that fashion has become an obsession akin to porn. And Steve Buscemi, Lily Cole, Bob Balaban, Patrick Adams, John Leguizamo, Dianne Wiest, Jude Law, all of them would became your personal friends and enemies. They speak to you directly.
They were speaking directly to me on the big screen, each image so crisp, so intense; each face so close, you can see every tiny movement of a muscle. So much drama without outside action. There are no sets here; you don't need them at...

Another Crisp and Controversial Film form the Gifted Sally Potter
Sally Potter takes chances. There are so many unique aspects of this film that reviewing it is difficult. The major aspects of the film include the very au courant 'rage' of blogging as a means of communication, the 'rage' to stay young and in fashion (that almost daily changing series of fads of what is in and what is out), the 'rage' of focusing everyone's attention on celebrity antics including drugs and death, the 'rage' to buy everything (if you don't own it and it looks like it is going to be popular then buy it), the 'rage' of climbing into the media world, be it film, fashion, television searching for that promised 15 minutes of fame, the 'rage' of PR, minding the selling promotion of a product without concern of its value, the 'rage' of creating new fragrances with a special name for fame, and the 'rage' for maintaining a wealthy or famous class and a poor or service class. Potter manages to take us through all of these phases with brilliant writing, fascinating character...

Interesting and unique
The movie was pretty interesting since it is done completely in interview style. The end was a bit odd and didn't feel it fit into the movie but otherwise it was good.

Animated Kids Bible: Voyage of the Ark

half the run time that is claimed and horrible audio
the video is ok i guess, i'd think something priced at 14 bucks would be better.. the future runtime is only 23 minutes not the 40 that they claim.

the audio is horrible it's hollow and muffled and hard to understand. its like someone recorded there voice on a laptop and a mic they bought from walmart for 9 bucks.

if the animation was the work of some highschool grade kids, then its a decent start, if its from an adult, i'm sorry but the quality is very sub par. not even up to the low standards of saturday cartoons.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

I wanted to love it
I really wanted to love this movie. The idea and cast give it the potential to be a hilarious romantic comedy, but sadly, it isn't.
I love Matthew McConaughey in pretty much everything he's ever been in. He's a good actor, but I really didn't buy him as a charmer in this movie. I really couldn't see why the women were falling for him. He wasn't even slightly charming or likable. He was just a jerk. It made me feel like the writers of this movie thought all women were just idiots ready to fall into bed with anyone.
Jennifer Garner is another of my faves in other movies. She wasn't bad in this one, but it wasn't enough to save the movie.

One thing I did like about this movie was Lacey Chabert. She was very believable as the nervous bride to be. She was freaking out about every detail as many brides do and was a wreck. She gave us some comedic moments and was cute as a button.

I'm glad I only rented this movie from Netflix, so I'm only out an...

Wonderful!
I love most movies with Matthew M. in and combined with Jennifer Garner it was wonderful! If you're a fan of romantic comedies, whats not to love? I don't know why other people rated it poorly, it's not meant to be a deep and awe-inspiring movie, it's just a funny diversion from the normal christmas versions. I added it to my small pile of must have movies.

This is how you ruin a fail proof premise
Charles Dickens gave every lazy script writer and theater company a great gift when he wrote A Christmas Carol. The story of Scrooge being forced to examine his life from his hopeful past to his lonely present to his useless end which gives him the opportunity to make a positive change is such a 20th century story of redemption convincing everyone that for maybe one day Freudian psychology not only works but works fast. There have been so many adaptations and modern retellings (I like Scrooged) that it's hard to say which one is the best.

However, we have this movie to see which one is the worst.

So what's wrong with this movie? Matthew McConaughey. I usually find him a pleasantly agreeable actor but the main character of a Christmas Carol adaptation needs to go through a journey. Even at his best, McConaughey doesn't have the acting chops to portray a man who must realize that his life is...

Adam Resurrected

As close to the horror as I've ever been
After a close friend "insisted" that I watch this film, I was absolutely torn apart by it, at times entertained by it and left with indelible images and feelings that may never leave me. It is a stunningly woven story of humanity at the peak of its potential for courage and resilience, as well as its unspeakable cruelty and taste for inflicting pain. I was startled, however, to discover that I was in the minority in my assessment. Most reviews, professional and otherwise, are either mixed or unfavorable. Is it too hard to take this film in? And if so, is it because of its intellectual or emotional demands - or both? As a psychologist and a Jew, let me say that I have never been made to feel the complex horrors of the holocaust on this level. Jeff Goldblum's performance is criminally unrecognized; it is the work of genius he has never before manifested. Perhaps the genius Goldblum found in the story itself, and in Paul Schrader's direction moved him to new heights. The rest of the cast...

Bunuel in the Negev
This masterpiece by Paul Schrader (who is not Jewish, but Pennsylvania-Dutch in origin, though you would not
know it from this work of art) is subliminal and heartbreaking on so many levels. I won't say this is
Jeff Goldblum's best performance because he has had several poor peformances; thus, it is impossible to
compare his phenomenal metaphysical psychotic discourse in this film to all his other mundane (whether
good or not so good) performances. The rest of the cast is stellar. The young boy ('dog') in the film
is heartbreaking. This film is not for the lighthearted or the impatient, nor is it for those seeking
easy answers or quik Hollywood cliches and fixes as it provides none. This film is wretched and
beautiful, painful and sublime and corroborates (though I doubt it needed confirmation) Paul Schrader
as a masterful Director and artist for the thinking adult and the scared child within. The anticipated
Academy Award's avoidance of...

The images in this film stay with you long afterwards
I had to wait a few days in writing this review as I wanted to try and figure out everything I just saw, plus the special features take some patience.

Jeff Goldblum plays a death camp survivor that has been committed to an asylum (years after the war) for survivors in Israel. Willem Dafoe plays the Nazi officer who tortures him, with some excellent supporting performances by Ayelet Zurer and Derek Jacobi. The story spans 40 years and is told in a non-lineal format crossing between black and white and color. The Blu clarity is outstanding at times, grainy in others but those scenes are made to be that way, otherwise the entire production has a high budget feel but simple at the same time. The DTS is used very well, and gets utilized in ways one would not expect from a Holocaust film (the cabaret scenes, the echoing barks in the asylum halls, the narration, etc.). The special features are a long watch and include:
* Behind the scenes, 24 minutes: A thorough...

Swordfish / Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (Double Feature)

Double Feature - Swordfish/Terminator
These are two of the best movies ever! If you want sex, drama, adventure, and edge of your seat thrils all rolled into two great movies, these are the ones for you.

2 Guy Movies for the Price of one!
This is 2 very good movies in one package. Seperately they are just ok, Terminator 3 was definitely not the best of the series. Swordfish is ok as well but most girls don't like that movie. Together in one package its a great deal and they both have some decent special features. A great find!

Swordfish/Termination 3: Rise of the Machines
Swordfish is great when it comes to matters like secret societies, just like Dr. Strangelove. Rise of the Machines, well I'm not that into machines.

Play Dead

Dying for recognition !
I picked this one up simply because I love independent film...and I haven't seen Chris Klien in too many films that where not comedies. Play Dead is about a frustrated out of work actor who jumps in his car with a destination of nowhere to blow off some steam. He ends up in a town, literally in the middle of nowhere where he stumbles upon some of it's deadly secrets and is forced to use his wits to survive. One of the most interesting things about this film is that though it has comedic moments it is not a comedy, though there is action...it is not really an action movie, though there is palpable drama...it is not a straight drama. This film defies the standard attempts to categorize it and with great results. Play Dead was an exceedingly entertaining film from start to finish. Klien delivers, but the real outstanding performances go to one time heart throb Jake Busey, and former front man of the band "LimpBizket" Fred Durst. In fact Fred Durst put on such a great performance,...

Entertaining!
I must say that I was glad that I bought this DVD, this movie because I would have never guessed that Fred Durst played a part that didn't even resemble himself, I loved it and of course there was was Michael Beach which I had the pleasure of meeting at the Harley Davidson dealership in Van Nuys, California, cool guy and someone I know personally Dean Delray who sold me my Fatboy motorcycle, did a great job of acting in this movie. This movie was funny, entertaining and in more simple words goofy, but in a good way, I enjoyed it and dragged my boyfriend to watch it and he laughed and couldn't figure out what part Fred Durst played as he had the pleasure of meeting and riding with as well as Michael Beach and Dean. We loved the movie so much we ordered and anyone who watches it will find it funny in parts and goofy as well. A great laugh!

Pretty cheesy, but....
It has Fred Durst in it, so I had to get it. Love him!!!! And he did a good job playing his character.

Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana

Featuring the characters of Disney Channel's `Wizards of Waverly Place', `Hannah Montana' and `Suite Life on Deck'
In 2009, the Disney Channel featured a crossover trilogy featuring their top sitcoms "Wizards of Waverly Place", "The Suite Life" on Deck" and "Hannah Montana". Needless to say, this rare crossover was a big ratings winner for Disney as over 9.3 million viewers tuned into the crossover episodes. And now, all three episodes are featured on DVD with "Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana".

Here is a listing of the episodes featured on the DVD and brief summary of the episode:

* Wizards of Waverly Place - Episode 25: Part 1 - Cast-Away (To Another Show) - In this episode, Justin wins a contest for a teenage cruise to meet London Tipton. Excited about the contest and excited about meeting London, Justin's sister Alex and Max come along. But with Alex, due to her missing homework, she is expected to study on the ship so Alex comes up with an idea: To bring Harper along and have her pretend she's Alex, while she has fun with Bailey and uses the alias Ashley Olsen...

An Awesome Crossover!!!
These three episodes mixes up the The Russo family, Zack, Cody, Hannah Montana, London Tipton, Lilly, Mr. Moseby, and Robby Ray! Justin Russo wins a trip to the S.S. Tipton and really wants to meet London, but he pretends to be rich so she'll like him. Cody tries getting tickets to a Hannah Montana concert, Zack falls in love with Alex Russo, and much more! I highly recommend WIZARDS ON DECK WITH HANNAH MONTANA!!!

Nice way to have the whole "trilogy" in one package; might have had more content
Fans of 60's television probably remember when characters from one series would "crossover" to another show, usually produced by or at the same studio. Morey Amsterdam appeared in his "Dick Van Dyke Show" character of Buddy Sorrell on an episode of The Danny Thomas Show. The casts of "The Beverly Hillbillies," "Petticoat Junction" and "Green Acres" often popped up on each other's shows. Rhoda called Mary Richards on her show. It's kind of a TV tradition (or gimmick, depending on whether your glass is half full or empty).

The Disney Channel sitcom characters have been doing this sort of thing for years, but probably never as elaborately in "Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana," which are basically three half-hour episodes that connect with each other: a winning essay lands the Russo teens on the S.S. Tipton, where Hannah Montana is having a concert. It all comes together rather well, considering how many behind-the-scenes intrigues and approvals it may have involved (all...

Dora Saves the Crystal Kingdom

Another great Dora DVD!
My 2 year-old daughter and I couldn't wait for this one to make it to TV, so we borrowed it from our library, and I'm sure glad we did! In the double-length title episode, Dora is once again on a storybook adventure, this time helping to preserve the Crystal Kingdom's beautiful colors by retrieving its four magic crystals from a greedy king. This episode put a lot of emphasis on sharing, always a popular theme for the preschool crowd, and followed the usual format and the same old, beloved cast of characters. My daughter was really excited when the Snow Princess made a few brief appearances, while I greatly enjoyed Richard Kind (Paul from Spin City) doing the voice of the greedy king. I did have to roll my eyes when Dora and Boots got butterfly wings, envisioning the inevitable marketing of butterfly-winged Dora dolls for Christmas, but as my daughter thought that part was "awesome" I guess I can't complain too much.

The other two adventures included on this DVD are both...

Wonderful
We were on a family vacation and Dora not only "SAves the Crystal Kingdom" she allowed us to get the much needed sleep we needed for traveling.

My 2 year old's FAVORITE!
I have watched this DVD in its entirety and I am very pleased with the cute songs, colorful outfits, and songs. My daughter can watch this DVD over and over again. If you're trying to make a decision on which Dora movies to get, this one is a winner!

Clive Barker's Book of Blood

Slow, deliberate and disturbing
This isn't a remake or a sequel. Instead it is a good movie. Sticking quite faithfully to the original short story by Clive Barker, this is a well made and often disturbing film. Great performances by the cast, an excellent script, a haunting score and some moody photography all work together to make this one of the better adaptations of a Barker story. The Bluray, while not exactly eye candy, is a faithful reproduction of the directors intentions and all the scenes are sharp and decent looking. Not much in the way of extra features but the included documentary is fairly thorough if a bit short. All in all a great film and an excellent transfer.

Not bad, but nothing special either
Clive Barker adaptations are usually even more hit and miss than Stephen King ones. The last one we had was the surprisingly good (and dreadfully underrated) Midnight Meat Train, and now here we are Book of Blood. The story of this film revolves around a college student named Simon (Jonas Armstrong) able to channel the dead, who is brought to a supposed haunted house by his professor (Sophie Ward). This whole story is told by Simon to a demented man (Clive Russell) who has been hired to collect Simon's scarred up skin. As far as Barker adaptations go, Book of Blood isn't all bad, as it does provide some genuine scares and well-done gore effects. Where it falters however is the fact that the film as a whole is poorly paced, and the twist ending really doesn't come as too much of a surprise either if you think about it. Still, Book of Blood isn't all bad, and if you're a Clive Barker fan, you could do a whole lot worse. Look for Doug "Pinhead" Bradley in a blink-and-you-miss-him cameo.

A Mixed Bag...not sure what I just watched
Being an aficionado of horror films my entire life, I struggled before writing this review. While I loved the premise, the makeup, the cast, and the film sets, there was something missing from this Clive Barker book. It had its moments, but they were slow...congested...repetitive...and boring. It never grabbed me. It never scared me. The premise had all of the tools to have us jumping out of our skin...but it just didn't work out that way. It deserves 2 1/2 stars...but I gave it 3 because I want others to sample this ditty. If you haven't seen a slew of horror flicks like me, you may ,love it. I liked it. Barker needs to bark up a better tree next time.

How To Be A Serial Killer

Unique mockumentary with some dark humor
Inevitably this is being called a copycat to Man Bites Dog - Criterion Collection but I feel this has some of its own flavor, to use a bad word, in creating a domestic take on the "genre". I would recommend giving this one a fair shot, and even though they pick the depraved-to-be as another video store clerk stereotype, I still enjoyed the premise and performances.

The film mixes a "documentary" (talking to the camera/stage audience like a self help guru) - and fictional (camera does not exist) look into this guys homicidal life as he recruits a protege to pass on his serial killer skills. The story splices this interview-the-people-in-the-main-guys-life with the murdering events as they occur. Sometimes it feels long, but in the end you get used to what they are doing with the film and it keeps a decent pace, especially knowing what the outcome has to be.

The sound is good and the picture...

Wickedly funny!
This film had me shreiking with laughter! It's filled with dark humor and sarcasm. It's so gratifying to see someone clobber total jerks (we've all imagined doing it ourselves.) And the "infomercial" format is hilarious! Matthew Gray Gubler is great as the apprentice. Loved this film!

Funny
After watching this I knew a lot of people might not enjoy it like I did. Funny, strange, and interesting at the same time. I love true crime books, tv shows, and movies and when I saw this was coming out on DVD I had to have it. The idea behind this movie is very funny, a man teaching another man to be a serial killer. I would not recommend this to be a family night movie, but I though it was worth getting.

WWII Remembered: A Complete History

Awesome Offering from Mill Creek
Mill Creek, who specialize in Creative Commons licensed material, have really set the bar with this one. This WWII Documentary is well shot, decent quality, and chock full of things I had never known before. The packaging is nice, and it's just a very enjoyable piece of work teaching about the Great War, World War 2. There are some real gems in here as far as footage and audio goes. Rare stuff, never-before-seen stuff, and more. There are interviews with real WWII vets who reminisce about the experience.

My only critique, and it's probably more a matter of personal preference: I would have preferred a slightly more energetic narrator. Considering that, for not being a PBS or History Channel piece, this is one well-assembled Documentary.

Pretty Good
Bought this for my husband, he liked it well enough, I heard no complaints so it has to be a good history of the darkest days in our world's history

Interesting but falls apart after a while
You should know what you're getting with these budget documentaries (in other words, nobody from the History Channel will be losing sleep over this DVD set). This series about WW 2 starts off respectably enough and I thought to myself "Wow, what a great idea!". Basically Mill Creek have taken loads of PD war footage (usually British and American government propaganda films) re-edited them and overdubbed some decent narration. The editing job is top notch and the narrator, although he's been slammed in other reviews for sounding lifeless, does a credible job. For the first few chapters this is all quite reasonable and the viewer will be left well-informed and entertained. Then, suddenly, it's as if Mill Creek just gave up and our narrator announces that we're just going to watch these government produced films in their entirety and vanishes. That's a shame because the first few parts of this are really compelling and watchable and a step above similar Mill Creek sets about the Civil...

The Killing Room

A Room Without a View
A movie as spare as the clinically white room in which most of the action takes place, THE KILLING ROOM is tightly wound and highly entertaining. Shot in a slightly monochromatic, gritty visual style the film introduces a room of strangers gathered together to participate in a medical experiment for cash--or so they think. What unfolds is part SAW, part THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, and just a tiny bit Jason Bourne and the video game PORTAL. Movies that focus on the 'what would you do to survive' motif are hardly new and usually fail because they are rehashes of old material or because they are simply too gross. THE KILLING ROOM is able to walk the fine line between ruthlessness and psychological tension coupled with a strange believability that really drives it all home.

The director Jonathan Liebesman has also wisely chosen to let the audience watch the action from both the killing room as well as from behind the scenes, all through the eyes of the very well acted Ms. Reilly...

Suspense, Mystery, Intrigue..
Let me start out saying I am reviewing the movie itself, and not the Blu-ray release. I have seen it in HD on HBO but have not yet seen the blu-ray (as it is not out yet).

This movie is an excellent suspense / thriller movie. Premise is that a small group of people are brought to a room for a "psychological research study". Basically under the guise that if they participate in the questionaire they will get paid. Things quickly go downhill from there, and soon become caught in an experiment that forces them to fight for survival The story isnt terribly original, but it is spun in such a way that it is definately worth watching. Also it is one of those stories that is best watched without knowing too much about it, as a large part of the movie is trying to figure out whats going on as they feed you little tid-bits of information throughout the movie.

Its not a big budget movie, so they keep things simple. This is not to say its low budget or low quality,...

(2.5 STARS) The Thriller Has Some Moments Despite Plot Holes
Four individuals are ushered into a small room, where they are told to fill in the questionnaire they are given. They are Crawford (Timothy Hutton), Kerry (Clea DuVall), Paul (Nick Cannon) and Tony (Shea Whigham). Obviously there are no connections between these people, except that they all have volunteered for the scientific or psychological researches conducted by some institute. But one terrible thing happens and they realize that what they are asked to do is something far more difficult than they expected, including their own survival. After all, the film's title is "The Killing Room."

The premise of the film might remind you of some of the recently-made thrillers (like "Cube" and "Das Experiment"). Part of the film's uniqueness, however, derives from its subplot (or main plot) about those who are observing the consequences of their researches. Chlo
